ITINERARY

  • 1 Arrival in Cairo

Our representative meets you at Cairo International Airport and helps with customs and luggage, then a private air-conditioned transfer to your hotel. The evening is free to rest off the flight or use the hotel.

    • Overnight: Cairo
  • 2 Giza and Saqqara

The Pyramids of Giza in the morning — the Great Pyramid of Khufu, then Khafre and Menkaure, with the Great Sphinx below them. Lunch at a local restaurant, and in the afternoon south to Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser is the oldest pyramid in the world and the clearest illustration anywhere of how the form was arrived at. Seeing the two sites in that order, a thousand years apart, is worth the drive.

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
    • Overnight: Giza
  • 3 Both museums

The Grand Egyptian Museum first, the newest and largest archaeological museum in the world and home to the greatest single collection of ancient Egyptian material. Lunch, then the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square in the afternoon — older, denser and much less curated, with royal mummies and a hundred years of accumulated finds. The contrast between the two is half the point of doing both.

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
    • Overnight: Cairo
  • 4 The Civilization Museum, the Citadel and Khan El Khalili

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization first, where the royal mummies are displayed in a purpose-built gallery. Then the Saladin Citadel, the medieval fortress on the hill above the city, and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali inside it, from where the view runs across the whole of Cairo. After lunch, Khan El Khalili Bazaar, for souvenirs, spices and traditional crafts.
