A day from Luxor to Cairo by flight, covering the Giza Plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum with a private guide and vehicle.
You go straight from the airport to the Giza Plateau. Your guide takes you round the Great Pyramid of Cheops and the pyramids of Chephren and Mykerinos, explaining how they were actually built and where the arguments about it still lie. From there you walk down to the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple beside it, where the rituals surrounding royal burial were carried out.
Lunch is at a local restaurant chosen for the purpose, with enough time to sit down properly before the afternoon.
The afternoon is given to the Grand Egyptian Museum and its collection spanning the whole of Egyptian history — royal statuary, treasures, and the ordinary household objects that tend to bring the period closest. The galleries are new and generously laid out, so it never feels like a scramble.
You transfer to Cairo Airport for the evening flight to Luxor, where you are met on arrival and driven back to your hotel.
