Aswan is the gentlest of Egypt's major stops — the river widens, the pace drops, and the first excursions take in the High Dam and the island temple of Philae, built for Isis and moved to higher ground when the water rose.

Breakfast on deck as the boat sails north towards Luxor. Kom Ombo comes first, a rare double temple divided evenly between Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus the Elder, standing on a bend above the water. Edfu and its Temple of Horus follow.

Into the heart of ancient Thebes. The Valley of the Kings is the first stop, where the pharaohs were buried in decorated tombs cut into the hillside, followed by the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon standing out in the fields.
