ITINERARY

Arrival in Luxor and the East Bank

You are met at Luxor Airport or the railway station and taken aboard the MS Farah, with lunch served once you have settled in. The afternoon covers Karnak, where the Avenue of Ram-headed Sphinxes leads in and the Hypostyle Hall is dense enough with columns to feel like woodland, and then Luxor Temple in the middle of the modern town. Tea on the sun deck when you get back.

  • Meals: Lunch, Dinner
  • Overnight: aboard, moored at Luxor
The West Bank, then sailing to Esna

Across the river after breakfast. The Valley of the Kings holds the tombs of the great pharaohs, cut deep into the cliffs and painted throughout. The mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut follows, and then the Colossi of Memnon out in the fields. Lunch back on board as the Farah sails for Esna and passes through the lock there, which is worth watching from the deck.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Overnight: aboard
Edfu and Kom Ombo

A horse carriage from the mooring to the Temple of Horus at Edfu, one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Egypt. Lunch on board while sailing to Kom Ombo, where the temple is divided evenly between two gods and the Crocodile Museum next door holds the mummified animals found on the site.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Overnight: aboard
Aswan

The High Dam first, then a boat across to the Temple of Philae on Agilkia Island, built for Isis and rebuilt there stone by stone once the water rose. The tour finishes at the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying in the quarry where it cracked, which shows the stoneworkers' methods more plainly than any completed monument. Lunch back on board and a free afternoon, or a felucca on the river.

Optional: A boat out to a traditional Nubian village

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Overnight: aboard, moored at Aswan
Disembarkation at Aswan

A last breakfast on board before you leave the boat at Aswan.

Optional: A guided trip by car to the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel, built by Ramses II for himself and Queen Nefertari

  • Meals: Breakfast
